Sewer pipe lining (CIPP) in Hampshire

Cured-in-place pipe lining is the repair most Hampshire homeowners end up choosing for a rooted clay lateral, because it fixes every joint at once without opening the yard. This page explains what happens on lining day, what the liner can and cannot do, and what to check afterward.

What lining day looks like at a Hampshire house

The crew arrives in the morning with a trailer carrying the liner, the resin, a wet-out table and a boiler or steam unit. Water to the house is shut off for the day so nothing drains into the pipe. The first hours go to cleaning: a jetter cuts roots and scours the clay joints, a descaling tool knocks rust from any cast iron, and a camera pass confirms the pipe is clean and still round. The liner is then measured to the exact length between the cleanout and the connection at the main, saturated with resin on the table, and inverted or pulled into the pipe. It is inflated against the old pipe wall and held under pressure while hot water or steam cures the resin, which takes a few hours. The camera goes back in, the branch connections are cut open, and the house is back in service that evening.

The defects a liner resolves

Lining is the right answer for the most common failures seen on Hampshire laterals. Open hub-and-spigot joints in clay tile are sealed along their whole circumference. Longitudinal cracks and circumferential fractures are bridged. Root intrusion stops because there is no longer any joint to enter. Infiltration of groundwater, which in the clay soils of Kane County can run constantly in spring, is shut off. Pitted and channeled cast iron under the basement regains a smooth, full bottom. Minor offsets, where one clay segment sits a half inch below the next, are smoothed over by the liner.

The defects it does not

A liner cannot restore grade. If a section of the lateral has sunk into the clay and holds standing water, the liner will hold standing water in the same place; the belly is not fixed, only sealed. A liner cannot pass a collapse or an offset so severe that the opening is reduced by more than a third. A liner installed over a pipe that was not cleaned to bare wall will not bond properly and may delaminate. Each of these is visible on the pre-lining camera pass, and a Hampshire property owner should expect the installer to point them out and propose how each will be handled before the liner goes in.

Hot water, steam and UV

Three cure methods are in common use. Hot water circulation is the oldest and most forgiving; it takes longer but holds temperature evenly through a long lateral. Steam cures faster and uses less water, which matters on a site with a small water supply or a long run. Ultraviolet curing uses a fiberglass liner and a light train pulled through the pipe; it is quick and produces a strong liner, and is more common on larger and commercial lines around Hampshire. All three produce a liner rated for a fifty-year design life when installed to the manufacturer's specification. The installer should name the method and the liner product in the scope.

Lining through the frost season

Because the liner is installed through the cleanout, winter in Hampshire affects lining less than any other sewer repair. The boiler or steam unit controls the cure temperature regardless of the air outside. The crew's main concerns are keeping the hoses from freezing between the truck and the cleanout and protecting the resin from cold before wet-out. If a cleanout has to be installed first, that small pit is the one weather-dependent part of the job, and a frost blanket laid the day before usually handles it.

The record you should take away

A lining job in Hampshire should end with the pre-lining video, the post-lining video showing the finished liner and every reopened connection, the permit sign-off, the liner and resin product names, and the written warranty. Lining and scheduling details for your address are at American Trenchless Technologies, Inc. pipe lining service for Hampshire homes and buildings. Installers who meet the lining trade's verification criteria are listed at all verified CIPP installers by state, and the criteria themselves are explained at the cured-in-place pipe standards reference. Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)

Does lining shrink the pipe so much that it clogs?+

A liner adds a few millimeters of wall. A four-inch clay lateral in Hampshire loses roughly a quarter inch of diameter, and because the new surface is smooth and jointless, it carries flow at least as well as the rough, root-hung clay it replaced. Lining does not make a lateral prone to clogging; the opposite is usually true.

Can the liner go around bends?+

Yes, within limits. A liner negotiates the long-sweep bends common in a lateral and the forty-five degree fittings at the foundation. A tight ninety-degree elbow can be lined but may wrinkle slightly on the inside of the turn, and the installer should tell you if your pipe has one. Multiple short-radius bends in a row are a reason to consider a different method.

How are the branch lines reopened after lining?+

The liner covers every opening in the pipe as it cures, including where the floor drain or a second stack joins the lateral. A robotic cutter is sent in with a camera to cut each connection back open from the inside. The locations are noted on the pre-lining video so none are missed, and the post-lining video confirms each one is open.

Is lining a good choice for Orangeburg?+

Often. Orangeburg in a Kane County subdivision that has gone oval but still passes the camera can be lined, and the cured liner holds its own round shape so the fiber pipe becomes a form rather than a structure. Sections that have flattened or blistered shut cannot be lined and are handled by bursting or a short dig, which the scope should state.

What should the lining warranty say?+

The term in years, that it covers the liner material and the installation, what happens if a defect is found on a later inspection, and that it is transferable to a buyer. The warranty should be on paper and attached to the post-lining video. Lining quotes in Hampshire begin with a camera inspection; call (815) 827-6647 to set one up. Estimates are free; call now.
