Sewer pipe line repair in Hampshire: a property owner's repair decision
Most sewer laterals in Hampshire were laid in vitrified clay before 1960 and are now past the age where root intrusion and joint failure are routine. This page explains how to read a backup, what the camera will find, and which repair fits each kind of damage.
Sewer Pipe Lining (CIPP)
A resin-saturated liner cured in place forms a new, jointless pipe inside the old one.

Pipe Bursting
A bursting head splits the old pipe while pulling new HDPE pipe in behind it, through two small pits.

Reading the backup before anyone picks up a shovel
A sewer problem in Hampshire usually announces itself at the lowest drain in the house. The floor drain by the water heater gurgles when the washing machine empties, a basement shower drains slowly, or after a summer storm there are two inches of gray water on the floor. Those three symptoms point to different causes. Gurgling and slow drains mean something in your lateral is restricting flow, almost always roots at a clay joint or a belly holding water. Water that appears only during heavy rain, with no warning the rest of the year, is usually the public sewer surcharging, which is common in the combined-sewer neighborhoods of the old city core and far less common in the separated systems of the collar-county suburbs.
The distinction matters because the repair is different. A restriction in your pipe is fixed by cleaning and then repairing the pipe. A surcharge is managed with a backwater valve or an overhead sewer conversion, and a pipe repair alone will not stop it. The camera inspection sorts this out in an hour.
What is probably under your Hampshire house
Housing built before 1960 across Kane County was almost always connected with vitrified clay tile in short lengths joined with hub-and-spigot joints packed with mortar or oakum. Those joints are where roots enter and where the pipe shifts as the clay soil swells in spring and shrinks in late summer. Under the basement slab the run is frequently cast iron, which rusts from the inside and loses its bottom first. A number of subdivisions platted in the 1950s used Orangeburg, a tar-impregnated fiber pipe that deforms into an oval and then flattens. Homes in the newer growth areas toward the Fox River and beyond usually have PVC, which fails at a crushed section or a bad glue joint rather than along its length.
Each material fails in its own way and the video shows which failure you have. That is why no competent installer in Hampshire will price a repair from a phone description.
Four ways the repair can go
If the pipe still holds a round shape and the defects are joints, cracks and roots, a cured-in-place liner installed through the cleanout is the least disruptive option, and the one that keeps the parkway intact. If the pipe has collapsed, flattened or lost grade, a liner cannot pass, so the choices become pipe bursting between two pits, a short excavation at the bad section, or full replacement by trench. A single bad joint under an otherwise sound run can take a sectional sleeve a few feet long. The method is chosen defect by defect, with the footage counter as the ruler. The local scope and scheduling are described at the American Trenchless Technologies, Inc. service page for Hampshire.
Frost, parkways and the village permit desk
Frost reaches roughly three and a half to four feet in a normal Hampshire winter, and the lateral often sits deeper than that between the house and the main. Trenchless methods keep most of the work below the frost line and out of the public right-of-way, which is the point. A trench across the parkway means a village right-of-way permit, a bonded restoration of the sidewalk and curb, and often a wait for the asphalt plant to reopen in spring. Lining or bursting that stays on your property avoids most of that paperwork, though the plumbing permit is still required and the connection at the main is still inspected.
Overhead sewers and backwater valves
Many Hampshire homeowners deciding on a lateral repair are also deciding whether to add flood protection. A backwater valve installed in the lateral closes when the street sewer surcharges. An overhead sewer conversion reroutes basement plumbing to an ejector pit so the gravity line leaves the house above grade. Either one can be installed at the same time the lateral is lined, and some municipalities offer cost-share programs for them. Ask the installer to address this in the written scope rather than as an afterthought.
What the report and the warranty should say
Before you sign, you should hold a copy of the pre-repair video with distances, a scope that names the method for each defect, the permit responsibility, and a written warranty stating the term and what it covers. After the work, a post-repair video should show the finished pipe end to end. Installer verification standards for lined work are explained at the verified installer profile for American Trenchless Technologies, Inc., and the registry behind them is at the CIPP installer verification registry. Questions we hear in Hampshire
Why does my basement back up only during heavy rain?+
In the older parts of Hampshire the public sewer carries both sanitary flow and storm runoff. When a downpour fills it, the water level in the street main rises above your basement floor and comes back up the lateral. A cracked or root-choked lateral makes it worse, but the surcharge itself is a capacity problem that a backwater valve or overhead sewer conversion addresses, not a lining job alone.
Can a clay tile lateral be lined, or does it have to be replaced?+
Clay tile that is cracked, offset at the joints or infiltrated by roots can usually be lined once it is cleaned, because the liner only needs the old pipe to hold a round shape. Tile that has collapsed, telescoped at a joint or lost its grade cannot carry a liner through that section, so the crew will propose pipe bursting or a short dig for that stretch.
Can sewer repair be done in a Hampshire winter?+
Yes. Lining and bursting work from pits or cleanouts, so frozen ground slows the crew only where a pit has to be opened, and a frost blanket or ground thaw unit handles that. Hot water and steam curing are not affected by air temperature. The main winter constraint is scheduling around snow events and the village's restrictions on parkway excavation.
Who pulls the permit for lateral work in Kane County?+
The licensed plumbing contractor does. Illinois requires state licensing for anyone performing drain and sewer work, and each village or the city issues the plumbing permit and, when the work reaches under the parkway or sidewalk, a right-of-way permit. The inspector usually wants to see the connection before it is covered. Keep the permit number and the final sign-off with your closing paperwork.
What does a free estimate include in Hampshire?+
A technician runs a camera from your cleanout to the public main, records the footage with distance markers, and writes a scope that names the method, the length of pipe affected, the access points and the written warranty terms. You keep a copy of the video. To schedule, call (815) 827-6647. Estimates are free; call now.
