Sectional point repair in Hampshire: lining one spot instead of the whole line

Not every sewer problem in Hampshire calls for lining the entire lateral. When the camera shows one open joint under the maple and sixty feet of tight pipe on either side, a sectional repair fixes that joint alone. This page explains how the short liner works and when it is the honest recommendation.

The single-defect lateral

Some Hampshire sewer inspections end with a clear picture: one joint at 42 feet has opened and roots are hanging from it, a driveway was poured over the lateral and one clay segment is cracked under the load, or a newer PVC lateral has one crushed spot where a fence post went in. Everything else on the video is sound. Lining the whole pipe to fix one spot is more repair than the pipe needs, and digging a hole seven feet deep in the front lawn to replace one segment is more disruption than the owner wants. A sectional point repair is the method built for this case.

What a sectional repair is

It is a short cured-in-place liner, two to six feet long, made of fiberglass or felt saturated with a structural resin. The section is wrapped around an inflatable rubber packer, drawn into the pipe from the cleanout to the exact distance of the defect, and inflated so the resin-wet material presses against the pipe wall and over the defect. The resin cures in place, usually in under an hour with the ambient-cure systems used on Hampshire laterals, the packer is deflated and pulled out, and a hard, sealed sleeve remains bonded inside the pipe. The repair is confirmed on camera before the crew leaves. On a Hampshire lateral the whole operation takes a few hours and leaves no mark on the ground.

Where it fits in Hampshire

Three local situations recur. The first is the clay lateral in an older Hampshire neighborhood where one joint directly below a parkway tree has opened while the rest of the line, away from the roots, remains tight. The second is the collar-county PVC lateral, laid in the last few decades, that is in good condition except for one section damaged by a later contractor or a settled driveway. The third is the previously lined lateral with a single defect in the liner, such as a spot where a branch connection was cut imperfectly. In each case the camera shows a localized problem, and a localized repair is proportionate.

Where it does not

A sectional repair should not be sold as a fix for a lateral with problems at several joints. On a pre-1960 clay lateral in Kane County, the joints are the same age and the same mortar; if one has failed from root pressure and frost movement, the others are on the same path. Patching the worst joint this year and the next worst joint next year costs more over a decade than lining once. A sectional repair cannot correct a belly, cannot pass a collapse, and does not restore a joint offset that is already blocking flow. The honest recommendation comes from the full-length video, not from the one bad frame.

Placement, grade and offsets

The sleeve follows the inside of the host pipe, so a small offset between two clay segments is smoothed by the sleeve's thickness and the resin that fills the gap. A larger offset, where the downstream segment sits noticeably lower, will still be lower after the sleeve cures; the sleeve seals the joint but does not re-level the pipe. The installer should tell you whether the offset is a sealing problem, which a sleeve resolves, or a flow problem, which needs the pipe segments re-laid by excavation. Local scope and scheduling for a point repair are described at sectional sewer repair by American Trenchless Technologies, Inc. for Hampshire.

Permits and paperwork for a small job

Even a small sewer repair in Illinois requires a plumbing permit and a contractor with state licensing. Because a sectional repair involves no excavation, it ordinarily needs no right-of-way permit even when the defect is under the parkway. The closeout should include the pre-repair video marking the defect, the post-repair video showing the cured sleeve, the permit record and a written warranty on the section. Questions we hear about sectional point repair

How long is a sectional liner?+

Between two and six feet, picked so the liner extends past the defect onto healthy pipe at each end and has something to bond to. One open clay joint usually gets about a yard of sleeve. A pair of nearby defects can share a single longer section; defects far apart get separate sleeves, and at some point a full-length liner becomes the simpler answer.

How does the crew put the sleeve where the defect is?+

The defect's distance from the cleanout is read from the camera's cable counter during the inspection. The sleeve is wrapped on an inflatable packer and pushed in alongside a camera, which watches the sleeve arrive at the marked distance. The packer is inflated, the resin cures, the packer is deflated and withdrawn, and the camera confirms the placement before the crew leaves your Hampshire property.

Does a sectional repair stop roots at that joint?+

Yes, at that joint. The sleeve seals the joint around its full circumference so roots lose their entry. It does nothing for the other joints in the lateral, which is why the inspection should show the whole pipe before a point repair is recommended. If roots are at several joints, the point repair is a stopgap and a full liner is the real fix.

Can a sectional repair be done under the street in Kane County?+

Yes. Because it is placed from the cleanout with no excavation, a sleeve can be set at a joint under the parkway or the street without a right-of-way permit, which is one of its advantages. The plumbing permit is still required. If the defect is at the connection to the public main itself, the sewer authority may have its own rules about work at the tap.

Is a point repair a good idea on an old clay lateral in Hampshire?+

Only when the camera shows the rest of the pipe is tight. On a pre-1960 clay lateral the other joints are the same age and material, and one repaired joint does not change their condition. An installer should show you the full footage and explain why one spot is the only problem. To schedule that inspection, call (815) 827-6647. Estimates are free; call now.
